lets talk spark plugs

Spark plugs believe it or nt are a huge factor when it comes to tuning and making sure the car will run right and to full potential. Crappy spark plugs will cause weak spark under boost and just all around poor running conditions.

NGK plugs, are the spark plugs that came stock on 4g63 vehicles. Br6es, to be exact, is the part number for OE plugs. They are copper plugs and are not projected. When you go to a parts store and ask for spark plugs for a 4g63 powered dsm they will most likely give you a spark plug beginning with bpr. This means it projects spark. This is the incorrect plug, as projected spark plugs seem to cause problems AT STOCK TO MODERATE SETUPS. keep in mind this is hit or miss not every car is the same.

NGK rates the heat of the plugs by numbers. The lower the number, the hotter it is. For example, br6es is a hotter burning plug than br7es. The higher the boost, the colder the plug should be. I'm at 22psi on a 16g and I am using br7es.

Bpr plugs should only be used on big turbo setups like gt35r, holset etc.

So, after reading all of this, lets start a debate on which plugs are better and why. Just keep in mind Mitsu engineers obviously chose ngk for a reason

Do you mean the HIGHER the number the colder the plug? If you use br7es and its a colder plug than br6es, then you would mean higher correct? Maybe just a typo. I knew what you meant but just wanted to bring it up to avoid confusion and mislead info.

Im currently using Autolite Platinums. I was gonna ask AJ whats the best plugs to get put I was already at AutoZone and didnt know when the next time I could get there would be so I grabbed the cheapest plugs that I didnt have to gap. Which I know is probably not the greatest decision but I really hate gapping plugs. Takes too much time to me. I changed my plugs in about 5 minutes and fired it up lol.

Autolite and champion in my opinion are junk. If i were you, id spend the 8 dollars and order br6es plugs.

NGK is all you should ever use in a dsm. Kurt, its not a huge deal but get NGK br6es as soon as you can. I agree with Cris, autolite and champion are junk in a dsm. They may be alright in a small block chevy but not so much in a dsm. But in your defense, you didnt know so its fine lol.

Will do. I will be getting new wires in the next couple weeks. They are next on my list. As well as a new filter. My K&N is dirty as hell. I know I can clean it but its all dinged and dented and what not for being taken out and put back in cuz you have to litterally force it down in there because there isnt alot of room for it.

Plug wires should be around $40. Same with a k&n filter. Do you have abs? Any thoughts about getting an aftermarket intake pipe?

There really isn't a reason to run anything other than NGK. if you decide that you dont like your money enough, BOSCH makes an NGK equivalent for triple the price. lol

I just run bpr6es to bump around town. They stay cleaner and last longer than 7's. If I go to the track I swap them out for non projected 7's. platinum ones will turn into glow plugs and burn holes in pistons. On dyno pulls I have pulled mine out and examined them to see what's going on inside.

I never use projected plugs. Can I ask why you use the projected plugs on the street but not at the track?

I have owners manuals from my car and a 92'. They call for projected from the factory. An original 2g plug is a dual electrode projected plug. It doesn't matter if you use a bpr7es or a br7es it is still the same heat range. The only reason I would us a non projected is if you have an issue with spark blowout or a piston to plug clearance issue. I found with that 7's would develope a high rpm misfire a high rpm if I used them to drive around town a lot. The 6's stay clean longer. I actually pull plugs and read them at the track to see if there is a tuning issue. Most people don't.

I ran Autolites in my 6 bolt before AJ took it and never had any problems... ran fine. But I never beat it unless some asshole pulled past me flipping the bird on the highway..... then I blew his doors in =)

I use ngk plugs in pretty much everything from bikes on out. I do have a set of Bosch plugs for my mustang that came with it though LOL.

I have used autolite and I've tried those 4 prong crossfires or whatever.. wayyy to much sizzle on that steak. such a waste of money. same with the revolutionary nology 150+ wires LOL..

Lot of people prefer the NGK's. Me personally, I use whatever. I like to run Platinum plugs usually because Im lazy and dont wanna gap my plugs lol. They come pre-gapped.

You guys are going to give me shit lol. I use the e3 platinum plugs. I like em. Motor ran nice before I pulled it. Any idea about those plugs?

Never used them. But the way I see it is if they work they work. Brand doesnt concern me. I dont know anything about plugs tho to me a plug is a plug. If my wallet hurts then I get cheapers if im stacked I buy good ones.
