Cleaning up the engine bay discussion

We all know that under our hoods and between our fenders, there is some pretty useless and bulky parts.

Why do we throw shit out? Weight reduction, cleaner engine bay, and easier work environment to name a few.

This thread is to discuss what we have removed. Pics, questions, advice, etc. Anything involving cleaning up that engine bay. Maybe you relocated something you would like to share. Pics are great.

In my talon, I have deleted emmisions (all vacuum lines and then added caps), charcoal canister, egr (made my own egr block off plate), and the three solenoids located on the driver side firewall.

Ac was also removed a long time ago. AC compressor, condensor, and all AC lines in the engine bay. I chose to keep the ac fuse box. Why? Because this way i can turn on the AC fan by pushing the ac button. I like having the extra fan for cooling purposes. Imo, much cleaner look than wiring the fan to an ugly toggle switch that doesnt look like it belongs in the car.

I plan on making a tech article about what all we can remove to make the engine bay look cleaner. Here is a few suggestions.

Delete emissions
Replace air canister with a filter
Remove AC
Install non cruise control cable
Delete ABS
Saturn alternator swap
Delete power steering
Aftermarket intake pipe
Switch to speed density, remove intake pipe, and put cone filter directly on the turbo.
Relocate coil pack
Relocate battery
Relocate coolant overflow
Remove windshield washer fluid resivor and lines
Delete un-needed solenoids on the firewall
Relocate things that are on the firewall, lower onto the firewall
Put a breather on the valve cover and remove the vacuum line
FMIC and hard pipes
Aftermarket aluminum radiator
Relocate fuse box
Slim radiator fans

Lets get some more suggestions!

I deleted my emissions, blocked off my egr, did a wire tuck, did a throttle cable tuck, switched over to speed density to get rid of the hideous maf, deleted ac, short route piping, relocated the battery, relocated the power transistor, relocated the alarm horn, Saturn alternator swap, stainless lines on turbo, relocated the coolant overflow and removed cruise control.

The easiest thing to do is a simple wire tuck. What i mean by that is turn your injectors 180* so the clip is facing the opposite way. Relocate everything on the intake manifold to suit your need. On 2g intakes, there are holes between the runners you can feed wires through. I put my whole harness under the intake and fed whatever wires up through the intake. Anothjer simple thing to do is a throttle cable tuck. Instead of it coming up over the intake, route it under it.

I deleted my emmisions, blocked my egr off, got a non cruise control throttle cable, took my ac and all the lines out. Power steering and all the lines for that. I plan on doing a wire tuck in the winter.

Hell yea, it's amazing what the lack of these things will do for the look of the engine bay.

Yep it is crazy how clean you can make them look. I also lowered my battery down under the intake.

Sweet, mine is down on my sub frame. Is that where you put yours??

Yep nice and simple haha. i didnt wanna run everything back to the trunk yet.

Especially with a FWD. I want all the weight in the front (weight that I have to keep).

Myself and AJ removed my A/C, Deleted emissions, and dropped my battery onto the sub-frame. I used purple power and scrubbed the hell out of everything under my hood along with my wife (I like to put her to work! Thats why my rims are so shiny!) Made a huge difference.

Another thing you can do is remove power steering. That clears alot of room. Im not gonna remove it because I am going to have a Road Course DSM. Deffinately gonna want that P/S.

Have you thought about running a manual rack out of a 1.8? I want to try and find one for mine for when i take my motor back out.

No Ive never even heard of someone doing that. Whats it all about?

Well the 1.8's came with manual rack and pinions. So their is no power steering, and they are alot easier to turn. You just take your rack and pinion out and put the manual rack in. i heard it can be a pain. But people who dont run power steering say its a good idea to do it.

Yea, the 1.8L rack is a great mod for the 1G's. Another perk for the 1G's that the 2G's lack. There really is no manual rack for 2G's.

The 1.8L's with the manual rack, doesn't have power steering. But, I bet if you drove the car you wouldn't be able to tell at all. Feels like power steering.

Yep theirs a guy in my town with a 1.8 and he said the same thing.

All my 1.8L's had P/S, maybe I was lucky. I even had to change the pump in one of them. Hmmmmmm.....

Yea, a lot of the 1.8L's had P/S. The ones that did not have P/S were the base models. Manual windows, no sunroof, pretty much no accessory options from the factory.

Yah i guess around here the only 1.8's i have seen were the base models.

Never had a base model. Speaking of cleaning up the engine bay I took out my A/C condensor today and Kim lost about 15 pounds from that Id say.

Yah same here. I took my a/c and with out the extra lines and junk it was worth it. the non cruise cable helps alot to. No more big ugly box on the firewall.

The cruise control box doesnt bother me. Its nice to have on long trips.

Yah. I guess every vehicle i have had hasnt had cruise control. I use to drive 4 hours one way for work last year and it wasnt too bad juss gotta watch the speedo alot. lol.

When my car is up and going I usually make alot of long distance trips.

Oh. Ya than a cruise is a must than. I will be only cruising in town ad occasionally highway.

Ok so why my motors out what all wire tuckscan be done. Can't do harness yet still need new One

Theres really only 1 "wire tuck" because its your engine harness but a lot of people relocate stuff to clean up the engine bay so its not an eyesore

You can remove useless emissions junk. Relocate things etc.

How do you switch to speed density to get rid of the MAF. i'm baffled:confused:
