OBD2 has no power

I lost power to my OBD2 port a few weeks ago and have been searching for why, I've checked all my fuses and wires and nothing looks out of place. I really dont want to take it to a shop, is there a way I can wire the power wire to another power source?

Is your key in the ON (with car not running) position when attempting this?

You can also use your radio as a power source.

I checked the power with the car off and the car on, and nothing. How would I go about using the radio power wire? just splice a wire between them?

Yea, just splice the wire into the power wire for the radio. Anything that shows 12V should work.

Sounds like a plan, I'm gonna do this this coming weekend while I'm wiring my switch for my headunit E-Brake Bypass

Please be careful when splicing and bypassing wires. I tried to bypass a dimmer switch in my brothers Talon and ended up having to pull the whole dash out and rip apart the whole wiring harness inside the dash and replace about 30 feet of wire because it all melted together. Also completely fried the wiring harness in a 95 Jetta by trying to bypass the fubar'd alarm system they have. Your taking a big risk for either a huge headache or possibly and electrical fire. Just take this into consideration. My best advice is to just find the problem. Might still be a huge headache but at least you know its done right and without any possible risks. Other than speaker wires, I have had alot of problems when it comes to splicing.

The power wire for your radio is connected to a fuse. Its only meant to handle just the power to your radio. If you add more power to it you are overloading the circuit. You will probably pop the radio fuse again and again. At this point most people resort to just putting a bigger fuse in there which in turn stops it from popping. So if that fuse is stronger than it should be, it wont do its job. When the fuse isnt doing its job it allows the circuit to become overloaded. Keep in mind its 12 volts of electricity flowing through this power wire. The wire will get hot and in turn either melt itself and other wires and cause a short in the circuit, and/or get hot enough to catch fire.

Not a very good idea to mess with power wires like that. Cars have intricate and complex wiring for a reason. Not just to be a pain in the ass lol. Try and get it fixed right to save urself from a problem.

I cant think of any reasons why it would stop working though. Follow the plug back as far as you can and check for lose connections, poor grounds, chewed or frayed wires, etc. Good Luck with this. Keep us posted.

I have seen a few people run into this problem. They splice into the Radio Power wire and all is good.

This stuff you mentioned CAN happen, but it can happen with any wire.

The amount of power that flows through the OBD2 wire is not large enough to cause electrical problems.

No update to report yet, havent had the time to do anything with it yet. I did notice one thing though. My door locks wont work unless im pushing on the fuse. A few days ago my cigarette lighter stopped working.

You definitely have a wiring problem. You are going to wanna take some time to thoroughly look there EVERY square inch of wire in your car.

Theres deffinately a short or possibly a bad/faulty ground somewhere. A common thing to look for on the 2g's is the dimmer switch. The actual knob to the left of your steering column that adjusts the brightness of your dash lights. Its known to be faulty on 2g's and can cause some pretty crazy problems. Either way its going to be something to do with the wires under your dash. So take your dash off and tucked inside it is the wiring harness. Look it over very thoroughly.

OBD2 ports usually get there power from the 12v source of a cig lighter. I would check your obd port for power with a test light or power probe. Here is some wiring color and pins for the obd port to the ecu.

Pin 1 Yellow to ECU pin 56 (Diagnostic Mode)
Pin 4 Black to Ground #5
Pin 5 Black/White to Ground #5
Pin 7 Pink to ECU pin 62 (Diagnostic K-Line)
Pin 14 Yellow/White to ECU pin 86 (Vehicle Speed Sensor)
Pin 16 Red/Black to ECU pin 80 (Backup +12v Power)
Pin 9 black/blue to ETACS-ECU pin 14
Pin 13 yellow/black to Auto Cruise-ECU pin 24 (cruise)
Pin 12 yellow/black to SRS-ECU pin 11 (SRS)
Pin 6 Yellow-Red to TCU pin 9 (ATX Diagnostic)

Im having a simular problem. Exept with Ecmlink/ and ODB2 scanner. I understand that Ecmlink mode wont let the scanner connect but this is about wires.. So far ive connected ODB pin 1 straight to ECU connector B-55 pin 56 and ODB pin 7 to ECU connector B-55 pin 62.. Im still not getting anything so i used my buddies multimeter and probed ODB pin 1 to ODB pin 5 and got ~2v and i know thats supposed to be around ~5v+. Does anyone know where the ODB pin 4 and 5 (both grounds) ground at? primarily pin 5.
