That's why I race dirt modifieds.
i resent this statement. lol.
define skill. its different with every type of racing. try perfecting trying to launch hundreds and hundreds of horsepower, without too much spin, consitently, without bogging out and falling on your face, or slipping the clutch too much and killing your 60ft. try mastering that in FWD and AWD, then try shifting, and getting your shift points right for each gear depending on setup. everyone thinks they can drive until they go to the track and realize "crap i shift pretty slow" or "dammit i only cut a 1.9 60ft?".....
dont knock the drag racing or the assumed lack of skill involved until youve gone and and laid down some 11s or 10s.
i know people who still cant drag race after years of passes, and ive seen other people who get it down after 1 day. first pass in my car was like a 13.3 or 13.5 (and that was on my first tune at like 315 whp, and i was barely running stock numbers). 6 passes later i had consistent 12.6's down and 1.7XX 60fts one after another.
just sayin.
I agree that drag racing is not "easy". There is a lot involved.
But, pertaining to dirt racing, we have to "launch" kind of EVERY restart. On dirt, with 500-600HP, and in my case running the IMCA modifieds, hard tires and skinny tires (compared to the dirt late models). For 30+ laps which can be anywhere from 30 minutes to 45 minutes. With no breaks.
It requires you to be quite athletic. Which means a lot of exercise and hydration.
My first couple passes down the drag strip, I did realize there is still quite a bit going on. Every time I was in the staging lane, I kept telling myself I need to look at my boost gauge. I did a total of 9 passes that night and never once looked at the gauge during a pass because I was too focused on the launch, shifting points, etc.
In the dirt modified, I have no problem looking at my temp/oil gauges. Not because there is a lot going on, but I have more time too look at it. We have 2 straight-aways per lap. And more time than a 10-15 second pass. So you tend to get in a groove, especially after doing it for so many years.
Every type of racing has its hard things. Some people may never become an average driver for that type of racing.
If you aren't already involved in some sort of auto racing, your trip to the strip may be very complicated and difficult.
