So, you just bought an awesome new DSM, huh? I bet you want to start doing some bolt on modifications. Well stop right there, pal.

The number 1 reason people with DSM's have their car break, is lack of maintenance. Leaking gaskets, torn hoses, cracked belts, lack of fluid flushes, etc, etc, will be detrimental to your car. Ever hear that DSM's are unreliable? Its because people just turn up the boost without changing an overdue timing belt, and it ends up snapping.

Here is a checklist you should look over before you should start doing anything aftermarket.

TIMING BELT/BALANCE SHAFT BELT.. I cannot stress this enough
    Oil change
    Coolant flush
    Accessory belts
Suspension - Control arms, struts, springs, bushings, ball joints
Brakes - rotors and or drums, pads and or shoes, brake lines, brake fluid.
Drivetrain - Differentials, axle seals, transmission fluid, differential fluid, clutch system.
Hoses - Radiator hoses, heater core hoses, throttle body hoses.
Gaskets - Head gasket, oil pan, throttle body, manifolds
Exhaust - Make sure there are no leaks from the system and hangars are in good shape.
Turbo - where applicable, check the compressor wheel for shaft play.

These are in no order, as you should check all of them! Once your caught up, mod away!

Almost done with my maintenance. Only things I got left is Timing belt, exhuast leaks which doesnt matter because Im getting a turbo back exhaust so dont count that, Coolant flush and ball joints. Then its modding time =)

When I go pick up a DSM, here is my general rule of thumb...

Timing Belt... Just plan on changing it. Every DSM you buy was "rebuilt" I have yet to find one that actually was.
Water pump. If you are doing a timing belt, you might as well just change this out. Its right there.
Oil Pump. Same as the water pump. Why pull the timing belt off later down the road?
Balance shaft elimination kit. dont just cut the belt, do it right. Kits are like 40 bucks. one less thing to take out your timing belt.
Tensioner pulley, auto tensioner, idler pulley... OEM is best here...

Regardless of what the previous owner says, I dont trust them unless they have documentation. lol

Very well said. My 2G, the previous owner said he just rebuilt the motor from top to bottom and it had less than 100 miles on it. 3 days after I bought it, I spun a rod bearing. Lightly driven, only like 7 or 8 pounds of boost, and it spun a rod. Luckily I had just rebuilt an engine myself for the 1G so I just dropped that in.

When buying a DSM, always tack on about $500 to the price so that way you can do the necessary maintenance work. All the big repairs plus all the small things like plugs/wires, fuel filter, etc.
