So, I learned something about my car today (the hard way). Got in my car this morning and was heading down the road to subway, gas light was on but the gauge said 1/4 of a tank. You can guess what's coming next, I ran out of gas. What is it that controls that gauge? is there a way I can adjust it? Do i have to replace the whole thing?

Fuel level sending unit. This sends the signal to your gauge. It is probably faulty and needs replaced.

Re: Gas gauge doesn't read properly
Rocket, Is it a stock pump or a wally ? I know when changing out the pump and resetting it back in the tank you can hang the float up on the hump in our gas tanks causing it to do that.
Oh just re read your post. It could be a faulty fuel sending unit. If you need help on replacement or diagnosing it just let me know. Will be glad to help.

Re: Gas gauge doesn't read properly
Like these guys said its a fairly common issue. I would trust the gas light far more than the gauge itself. Another thing to do is watch your mileage.

Even if your gauge doesnt read properly, for some reason unknown to me the light is usually trust worthy. You have 30 miles worth of gas until the faithful ol' DSM leaves you walking to get her some food.

Re: Gas gauge doesn't read properly
Lol I learned that many times kurt haha. My gauge isnt really synced with my dummy light but like add said I watch my milage and dummy light. If they do work together I love how our gas gauges are with the whole thing about it getting brighter u guys no what I mean?
