Need wiring advice.
Ok so my brother has a 95 Talon ESi 420A. His dash lights went so I bypassed the dimmer. Thing is it started blowing other fuses and melted the wires as far back through the harness as I could see from under the dash. Im going to attempt to fix it by ripping out the dash and basically following the wires completely to their end and replacing them with new wire. Then taping it all back up and putting it all back together. Its gonna be alot of work. Is there and easier way and should this work to get it to stop blowing fuses. I know these 2 wires are melted together and keep shorting and blowing fuses. Is it possible that it caused other shorts that I should concern myself with? I know if fuses blow its actually a good thing in a way because it stops all the other wiring to be affected right? Basically just looking for some guidance and advice.

Get it done and over with, and just do the new wires, its probaly easier in the long run , then pieceing it together, and ending up still having the same problem.

Wiring is not something for the inexperienced to mess with. I would return the wires back to the way they were and get a new dimmer switch.

It all really depends on what you feel confortable with doing.

Re: Need wiring advice.
If you are going to do it please please please at least use proper strippers, crimpers (yes there are proper crimpers), and heat shrink that crap! I like to solder the wires together but that could be considered over kill.

Re: Need wiring advice.
Soldering wires is definitely not overkill. it is the proper way to do any wiring on a car. DO NOT be a cheap skate and just butt connect everything to hell. The point of soldering is you don't lose resistance across wires, and the wires do not pull apart like a butt connector. Good advice shake. Sorry for my rant i just HATE when people butt connect wires, soldering is so simple there really is no excuse not to do it.

@ Cris - agreed... didn't wanna seem like I was coming down too hard but solder guns are cheap and shorts in your harness are harder than hell to find.

Ya I also would rather solder. But, I will be replacing the entire length of both wired right from the pins in the connectors that they plug into. So soldering wont be needed, just ALOT of wire.

Because its probably fried all the way through and Id just rather be safe than sorry. Wanna make sure this dont happen again. Im real thorough and anal when it comes to wiring. You should see it when I have to hardwire a stereo system lol.

Re: Need wiring advice.
Haha you would hate my audio wiring. I break all the rules and don't even use butt connecters... wait for it... I USED ELECTRICAL TAPE ONLY!!! Haha rep points lost on this post... flame away.

Re: Need wiring advice.
Im so anal with wiring I wont even attempt to even wire a stereo with soldering. If I'm too lazy, I wait until i have enough energy to do it. I'll literally drive around with no stereo until its done correctly. Seriously, its not worth it having a poor connected wire come undone and ground out on metal or just come unconnected and you have to redo it all again.

Yes I have done the ELECTRICAL TAPE wiring before but IF I do that its just temporary untill I can go back and redo it all again.

Re: Need wiring advice.
so question is.... did you think of replacing the gauge cluster first? or testing each circuit on the cluster to check the resistance of each one to make sure there's no short ? I'm sorry to say that I'm a Ford Mechanic lol and I know i come across this problem quite often. Between clusters going bad and after market car theft systems going bad you wouldn't believe the things I've seen happen...

Re: Need wiring advice.
I replaced about 30 feet of wire under the dash and the problem was solved. Theres a few blown lights in the cluster and the dimmer switch was bad as I had thought. Finished this up a few months ago. Still gotta get him a new dimmer switch and some bulbs for the guages. But I fixed the melting wires. As I had suspected, it had melted wires all the way through the dash harness.
